Events are incredible for bringing people together, but they also create a lot of waste. On average, each attendee generates over 4 lbs of waste per day—that adds up fast! The good news? Making events more sustainable doesn’t have to be hard or expensive. Small changes can make a big impact.
Easy Sustainability Wins:
Badges & Lanyards – Use recycled material lanyards and set up a simple return station to recycle them post-event. It’s a small change with a big impact!
Hotel Toiletries – Instead of tossing unused hotel toiletries, collect and donate them to Clean the World, which distributes hygiene products to communities in need.
Food Waste – Food is one of the biggest event waste sources. Work with venues to:
Donate surplus food when possible.
Reduce excess by using smaller plates or getting accurate headcounts.
Choose locally sourced ingredients to cut down on food miles.
Ditch Plastic Water Bottles – Set up water refill stations and encourage reusable bottles.
Decor & Gifting – Swap cut flowers for potted plants that guests can take home. Choose gifts that give back, like locally made or community-supporting items.
Recycling & Composting – Work with venues to set up clear recycling and composting stations so attendees can dispose of waste properly.
Think Local & Walkable – Use LEED-certified venues, plan events within walking distance, and consider food trucks or offsite venues that showcase the local community.
Sustainability isn’t all or nothing—even small steps make a difference. Let’s create events that leave an impact on people, not the planet!
